Austere 5-Star Ministers!

IE reports that two Union Ministers, S M Krishna and Shashi Tharoor have been staying at Maurya and Taj respectively for the past three months because their official accommodation is not yet ready. The official line is that these guys are paying the bills from their own pockets.

As long as this is the case, it's fine by me. They can do whatever they want with their money. However, it's not clear how much they have coughed up so far, and there is certainly no guarantee that they will not claim reimbursement from the government for the same in the future. Considering that the minium tariff for a night's stay at any of these hotels is supposed to be Rs. 40000 at the very least, I am pretty sure the taxpayer will be forced to pay the bills in the end.

The breaking news is that External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has asked them to vacate these hotels and move to government accommodation. That means that it is the tax payers who have been paying the bills!

There is no dearth of government guest houses in Delhi. But India's new "freedom fighters" go only for the best whenever it is free!

Wow, there we go again. It is as I had suspected from the beginning. No sane person would pay 40000 bucks a night to stay in a 5-star hotel at his own expense. It's the taxpayers who will pay those bills after all.

It seems our babus and politicos are not satisfied with the luxurious government accommodation built for them on premium land in the capital which is worth hundreds of crores of rupees.

The Presidential suite that Krishna was staying in costs Rs 2 lakh a day. Has he paid Rs 2 crore from his pocket? Has Tharoor paid a little less also from their pocket? A PIL needs to be filed to get to the bottom of it. These ministers should also be asked if, being leaders, they have made any have donations for those affected by drought

Yes. Prannoy Roy has been championing the 5-star rights of politicians on NDTV. Today Rahul Gandhi has spoken in favour of austerity. I wonder how Roy will turn turtle!
