Apparently, Indian honey manufacturers sell contaminated honey domestically, while they export a cleaner variety. The Centre for Science and Environment has discovered different types of antibiotics in 12 brands of honey sold in India.
The Director of CSE, Sunita Narain explained "the beekeeping industry uses antibiotics to control and prevent outbreaks of diseases in honey bees, and as growth promoters to increase production."
These antibiotics are present in the jars of honey that find their way to our homes.
Interestingly, the honey which is to be exported is checked strictly, since antibiotics in honey are banned in most countries. However, in India, there are no domestic standards that the manufacturers have to comply with.
Sunita Narain says, "That stock which gets rejected for export since it is considered unsafe for consumption finds its way back to the domestic market."

I watched this program. I think it is only we Indians who are careful when it comes to 'others', including those who like to believe so,and careless and negligent when it comes to fellow Indians. This disease is not limited to Honey or products. It can be seen in foreign policy, handling of Kashmir etc etc etc.
I wonder why.
On this issue, Baba Ramdaev says that the problem is with the chemicals being sprayed on the plants. He may be right--his brand of honey has same problem.
This news is very difficult to digest. We, Indians, feed honey water to new born babies too, thinking that it is good for them. I used to give honey with chapathis, dosas etc. instead of ghee and sugar! I must stop recommending this to others now!
@ BK Chowla- Baba Ramdev may be correct. That may be part of the problem.
But according to these news reports, antibioticts are directly used in bee-rearing also.
They are used to get queen bees to lay more eggs and to ensure that the European bees which have replaced Indian bees, do not fall prey to illnesses.
