Madhabi Khatoon, 7, of Murshidabad district , rolling beedis since she was five, now rolls 400 a day, working 14 hours a day.
She is at risk for tuberculosis, postural and eye problems, anaemia, lung and skin diseases. Continuous beedi rolling and exposure to tobacco, makes fingertip skin thin, and they are unable to roll beedis by the age of 45. They have to resort to begging as they know no other trade or occupation
1 out of every 6 girls dies before her 15th birthday.
1 out of 4 girls is sexually abused before the age of 4.
Death rate among girls below the age of 4 years is higher than that of boys and 53% of girls in the age group of 5 to 9 years are illiterate.

Whose day indeed.
In the cool environs of air conditioned Delhi, everyone talks of abolishing child labour, and punishment for those who employ children. Those who deserve punishment are actually the ones who have not provided the enabling conditions of gainful employment and education that will automatically do away with this inhuman practice.
A Unicef report says 61 million children in India are stunted. Most other statistics also reinforce the fact that Independent India has done little to look after its children
It is such a sad situation. And far more complicated than those who celebrate 'days' think. As distasteful as child labour is, the alternative, in current conditions, may be even more so.
I read that many girls who have been 'rescued' from child labour either go right back, or else have to turn to prostitution to earn money.
Rescued boys are obliged to turn to begging on the streets.
Abolishing child labour is topic for discussion to complete the formalities and so that during next elections they a point of reference.
Only two days ago,a Delhi minister's house was raided becuase of child labour employed.
