The Gwalior District administration ( in Madhya Pradesh) has hit upon a novel way to force people to pay their electricity bills. According to this new plan, anyone who doesn't pay their power bills will lose their gun licence.
'Guns have traditionally been the ultimate status symbol in the ravines of the Chambal, and men frequently go to ridiculous lengths to acquire an arms licence.'
Gwalior Collector Akash Tripathi has provided the details of the arms licence holders to the power company. And 'it will get back to us with the names of the defaulters'.
The administration feels that the fear of losing their gun licences will make people pay their bills.
An ingenious idea for sure- time will only tell if it works!

Good idea. More and more people should look beyond the rules to find innovative solutions like this one.
In this case, I don't know if the idea came from the power company; the government couldn't be bothered about unpaid bills!
No it was not the power company. One NGO intervened in the matter.
After this matter,I believe a case on almost similar lines was settled in UP.
