Family 'Jinnahs': democracy lost

The political war between Uddhav and Raj Thackeray has entered a new zone with Shiv Sena patriarch Bal Thackeray launching a frontal attack on his nephew Raj, by calling him “a modern day Jinnah” playing into the hands of the Congress to divide Marathis. With elections in Maharashtra less than a fortnight away, this statement is bound to heat up the political atmosphere in the state.

Today we may be watching a fight in a divided political family in Maharashtra. But, given the way politics is becoming a family business across the country, it is only a question of time before many more family 'Jinnahs' emerge in other states as well as the Centre.

Have we not lost our way in our experiment with this model of democracy blindly copy-pasted from a tiny and very different island?

Bal Thackeray seems to have amnesia of what he did in the 70s and recently. He thinks he belongs to some Maratha land which is outside India.

Jinnah might be many things but what he did at that time wasn't so grave compared to what Thackerays and the likes are doing now.

That is a very interesting deduction!

'Have we not lost our way in our experiment with this model of democracy blindly copy-pasted from a tiny and very different island? ' You know, I read somewhere that even the British felt that their system might not be as suitable as the American alternative. But apparently Americans were looked down by our British educated leaders..

As for Bal Thackeray - the statement is a little too rich coming from him !

In retrospect,we made a big blunder, didn't we?

With an American-type system and max two terms for President, 90% of the ills that India faces thanks to the current model would have never arisen in the first place. Imagine how different India would have been had Nehru quit 8 years after adoption of the constitution, in 1958....
